Immediate Results

By Marisela Garcia

Education is so fundamental in the life of an individual. I was really touched by the stories of the three girls from Ethiopia and the support by their parents. These stories portray the importance of the support of your family and those around you. In these scenarios, the positive deviance act is support and confidence.

When asked what these parents would advice the parents of other girls regarding their education, these parents empathize the importance of an education to live in knowledge and wisdom. Challenges they face: parents want immediate results to their situations, they don’t look toward the future. Often times we overlook the solutions because we are too focused on immediate results, we want answers now. If only life worked that way.

“The challenges you are telling me exist everywhere and live with everybody.” The positive deviance approach is effective because everyone has access to the same resources, and faces the same challenges and obstacles; however they look for alternatives for solutions. If I learned anything from these stories, support, encouragement and taking risks goes a long way.
